Why do teeth discolour?
Unfortunately, it’s an irritating fact of life that our teeth discolour naturally over time. This happens for many reasons. Often genetics will play a part- as will our lifestyle and general oral health (including how well we clean our teeth). Staining can also be caused by the medications that we take on a regular basis.
More often than not, tooth staining is caused by our regular consumption of particular food and drinks which, over time, darken the colour of the tooth enamel. Smoking can also significantly speed up the discolouration process.
Is tooth whitening safe?
Tooth whitening is safe when performed by a qualified dental health professional. Treatments carried out elsewhere- including beauty and hairdressing salons- are unregulated and could potentially damage your teeth and gums.
Our whitening treatments are generally suitable for most people. You will be invited in for a consultation so that we can advise you on the best treatment for you.
Whitening does not work on fillings, crowns and bridges. It is possible to remove stains from most real teeth- even those with root damage. Teeth with very bad staining (due to tetracycline or fluorosis) may not respond to treatment- or could require longer treatment times.
Treatment should be pain-free although you may notice a slight increase in sensitivity of the teeth and gums which should improve once treatment is finished.
